Airbus Reports Record Shipments in 2016, Modest Price Increases for 2017

European aircraft maker Airbus reported Wednesday morning that the company delivered a record 688 commercial jets in 2016 and took orders for 731 new planes during the year. The order book includes an order for 100 passenger jets from Iran Air.

Last week when Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) reported its 2016 orders and deliveries, the company did not include the 80 planes that Iran Air has committed to buying. The difference is that Airbus’s book-to-bill ratio for 2016 is greater than 1.0 while Boeing’s is about 0.9.

The Airbus order backlog now totals 6,874 planes, with a list price value of more than $1 trillion. Boeing will report the contract price value of its 5,714-plane backlog when it reports earnings later this month.

The president of Airbus Commercial Aircraft and the company’s chief operating officer, Fabrice Brégier, said:

We delivered on our objectives in a challenging environment, proving our ramp-up readiness for the future. I salute all our teams on this outstanding achievement. Our strong operational performance combined with a robust market eager to place orders and take deliveries of aircraft in all sizes are now an excellent springboard for our next steps: Boosting deliveries, harnessing the advantages of Digital and extending our service portfolio globally.

The company also announced this morning an across-the-board price increase of 1% for 2017. Boeing did not raise list prices in 2016 and would not normally introduce new pricing until mid-year.
