GM's Chevy Cruze, Pickups and SUVs Recalled

Late on Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the car maker is recalling 172,000 of the cars and, in another notice, recalling 490,200 of the company’s pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles.

The Cruze recall appears to extend a recall first issued in September of 2013 to replace the right front half of the car’s axle. The shaft may fracture and separate without warning, although no crashes or injuries have been reported. The recall affects only some of the 2013 and 2014 model year cars.

The company also is recalling some 2014 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups and some 2015 Chevy Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs. The vehicles could have a cooler-line leak that may cause a fire. GM told the Wall Street Journal that it is aware of three such incidents but that there have been no injuries from them.

The Chevy Silverado pickup is GM’s best-selling vehicle and the Cruze is its best-selling car. GM sold 248,000 Cruze models last year and nearly 480,000 Silverado pickups. The company also sold 184,000 Sierra pickups.

CEO Mary Barra is scheduled to testify in front of two congressional committees later this week to answer questions on why it took 10 years for the company to recall some 2.6 million vehicles that had defective ignition switches that have been implicated in up to 13 deaths.
