Ford Posts Top Unit Volume for a Weak July in Pickup Sales

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) sold 69,467 F-Series pickups in July, topping sales of General Motors Co.’s (NYSE: GM) Chevy Silverado by 23,501 units. Adding in sales of the GMC Sierra, Ford outsold GM in the pickup wars by 3,538 units.

Ford F-Series pickup sales rose 5.8% year over year in July, compared with a decrease of 15.1% in Silverado sales and a drop of 11% in Sierra sales.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.’s (NYSE: FCAU) Ram pickup sales were flat year over year at 39,708 units sold in the month.

Other full-size pickups on offer in the United States are the Tundra from Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) and the Nissan Titan. Tundra sales for July totaled 10,546, up 0.7% year over year. The Titan sold 3,791 units in July, up a big 231.7% compared with July 2016.

Sales of GM’s midsize Colorado pickup rose 21.9% to 11,206 units and sales of the GMC Canyon fell 21.8% to 2,761 in July. Nissan’s midsize Frontier pickup sold 7,647 units in July, up 5.6% year over year. Toyota sold 17,372 of the company’s midsize Tacoma pickups, up 4.8% compared with July of last year. Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (NYSE: HMC) sold 2,586 units of its Ridgeline midsize pickup, down 23.6% from 3,518 units in July of 2016.

In the full-size pickup segment, June sales of 175,104 vehicles from the Detroit Three pencils out to a Ford market share of 39.7% (a month-over-month decrease of 1.9 points). GM’s share came in at 26.3% for the Chevy Silverado (down 0.7 points) and 11.4% (up 3.0 points) for the GMC Sierra. Ram’s market share totaled 22.7% (down 0.3 points). Combined, the Detroit Three sold about 7,000 fewer full-size pickups (about 3.8%) in July than in July 2016.
