With just the month of December left to count for this year, global sales of Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) cars and light trucks are down 0.9%. Global sales through November totaled 5.63 million units.
Last year Ford sold a worldwide total of 6.65 million light vehicles for a worldwide market share of 7.3%. The top sellers in 2017, to no one’s particular surprise, are the F-Series pickup with global sales of 973,764 units according to industry analyst firm Focus2Move. The second-best seller so far this year is the Focus with sales of 617,955 units.
In North America, Ford has sold 2.52 million units through November, down more than 1% year over year. Sales in the European Union are up over 1% to 1.24 million units, while sales in Asia are down more than 6% at 969,841 units.
Ford’s fastest growing sales regions are the Confederation of Independent States (former Soviet Union republics), where sales are up more than 15% to 50,630 units, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with sales growth of more than 12% to total 117,725 units.
A couple of interesting notes for the future. Ford will introduce a new midsize Ford Ranger pickup in the United States for model year 2019. The current version of the Ranger is sold in selected countries in South America and Asia with total sales through November of 233,746 units. Ford discontinued U.S. sales of the Ranger in 2011.
Ford will also introduce a new Bronco midsize SUV in the U.S. market in 2020. The Bronco was discontinued in the mid-1990s, and both it and the Ranger will both be built on the same Australian-designed platform.
After posting sales growth averaging around 5% for several years, Ford’s global growth rate rose just 1.7% in 2016 and is looking to close this year with a slight decline. Whether new models of familiar badges along with the addition of several new electric vehicles will turn the company’s fortunes around over the next couple of years remains to be seen.
