Mercedes-Benz Mystery AMG GT to Debut in Geneva

Despite a stream of press releases and other teasers, Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz division has said little of substance about the AMG GT Coupe that the company says will make its first public appearance at the Geneva International Motor Show that begins later this week. In other news from Geneva, automakers have reportedly seriously reduced the number of female models (referred to in the trade as “booth babes”) who will be flogging this year’s new cars.
The only thing that is certain about the new version is that it will have four doors because that’s how Mercedes-Benz has described it. There are virtually no other details.
Mercedes-Benz already makes a two-door AMG GT Coupe that carries an entry-level price tag of $112,400, an AMG GT S Coupe (also two doors) beginning at an MSRP of $132,400, an AMG GT C two-door coupe for $145,000, and an AMT GT R Coupe that starts at $157,000.
Auto magazines speculate that the new four-door coupe will use the same 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 that delivers horsepower ranging from 469 hp to 577 hp. The biggest engine sends the car down the track from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
An 800-hp version was presented as a concept at last year’s Geneva show. The concept car also offered three driving modes: all-electric, all-internal combustion, and a blending of the two modes. The 800-hp hybrid mates the V8 with the company’s all-wheel drive system and an electric motor located on the rear axle to boost acceleration and provide power individually to the rear wheels to help stabilize the car while cornering. Mercedes-Benz claims a 0 to 60 time of less than 3 seconds for this version.
Only a few more days until all is revealed.
