Chrysler Group LLC will begin a recall campaign for nearly 300,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commander models manufactured between 2004 and 2010 to repair a problem in the vehicles’ 4-wheel drive transfer case. The company said that an electrical failure in the transfer case actuator may result in unintentional shifting into or through the transmission’s neutral position, possibly causing the vehicle to roll away that may result in a crash.

In an investigation that began in January 2012, the company found that small cracks in the actuator’s circuit board traces could send a signal to the drive controller that could be wrongly interpreted. The repair will consist of reprogramming the drive controller. The company said it would begin notifying dealers and owners of the recall in June.

The Los Angeles Times also notes that Chrysler will also recall more than 5,000 Jeep Wranglers built between 2007 and 2011 to repair a problem with a driver-side airbag that may not deploy in a crash. Chrysler will also recall 498 Dodge Ram trucks to fix a problem with windshield defrosters.
