Rolls-Royce to Build an SUV

In the category of things we didn’t know we needed there must surely have been a spot for a sport utility vehicle (SUV) built by Rolls-Royce. That spot is about to be vacated, however, as the super-luxury carmaker announced on Wednesday that it has reached another “seminal moment in Rolls-Royce’s 111-year journey.”

The company has confirmed that it plans to build an “all-new Rolls-Royce with exceptional presence, elegance and purpose” which we think is super-luxury speak for an SUV. According to the company, the new Rolls-Royce will be “Effortless … Everywhere.”

Here is how the company describes the concept in a letter from its chairman and CEO:

  • A car that offers the luxury of a Rolls-Royce in a vehicle that can cross any terrain
  • A car that meets our customers’ highly mobile, contemporary lifestyle expectations
  • A Rolls-Royce that is as much about the pioneering, adventurous spirit of Charles Rolls as it is about Sir Henry Royce’s dedication to engineering and innovation
  • A car that appropriately reflects Rolls-Royce’s brand promise of effortless luxury
  • A high-bodied car, with an all-new aluminium architecture
  • A unique new motor car worthy of carrying the Spirit of Ecstasy into the future

Rolls-Royce “promises to take [its] time in developing and perfecting this new concept in luxury.” That should give us plenty of time to save enough to buy a hubcap or two.

No word on pricing for the SUV, but we would guess in the range of a Rolls-Royce Ghost (about $260,000) to a Wraith (around $285,000). A top-of-the-line Phantom starts at around $475,000. There is a large gap between the Wraith and the Phantom, so the new vehicle could snuggle into the $300,000 to $350,000 range. What ho, Jeeves!
