Ford Sales Rise in June, but Pickup Sales Still Faltering

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) on Tuesday posted a U.S. sales increase of 2% year-over-year in June to 225,647 Ford and Lincoln vehicles, compared with June 2014 sales of 222,064. Truck sales declined 0.7% for the month after falling 5.1% in May.

Total sales compare to estimates of about 221,400 units from Edmunds and 232,000 from Kelley Blue Book.

Sales of the all-new Ford F-Series pickups declined by 8.9% in June to 55,171 units and sales year to date are now down 2.4%. Ford noted again that inventory on dealer lots continues to build as the plant comes fully online, and it said that the new trucks are turning over twice as quickly as the industry average for half-ton pickups. That is no doubt true, but sales volume needs to pick up — and soon.

Truck sales comprise about 34% of all Ford division sales, and the F-Series pickups accounted for 24% of total sales in June. Ford has said that F-150 sales will strengthen in the second half of this year, once the second assembly plant in Kansas City is running at full capacity.

Ford’s Escape small SUV saw a sales drop of 3.9% year over year, on top of a decline of 8.3% in May. Sales of the all-new Transit totaled 12,134 units in June, and the new truck has sold a total of 57,643 units for the year to date.

Sales of Lincoln cars rose 14.5% year over year, while sales of Lincoln utility vehicles rose by nearly 43%. Car sales totaled 3,068 units in June and utility vehicle sales totaled 5,258 units. Year to date, Lincoln car sales are down 19.3% and utility sales are up 34.4%.

The stock traded down about 0.9% Wednesday morning, at $14.88 in a 52-week range of $13.26 to $18.12.
