Ford F-150 Outsells Silverado by 22,000 Units in January

Ford Motor Co.

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) sold 57,995 F-Series pickups in January, topping sales of General Motors Co.’s (NYSE: GM) Chevy Silverado by 22,242 units. Even adding in sales of the GMC Sierra, Ford outsold GM in the pickup wars by 8,710 units. January sales are traditionally the lowest for the whole year.

Ford pickup sales rose 12.5% year over year in January compared with a decline of 6.1% in Silverado sales and a drop of 4.5% in Sierra sales. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s (NYSE: FCAU) Ram pickup sales rose 4% year over year to 33,769 units sold in January.

December buyer incentives remained high, but were a little lower than December incentives at all the Detroit Three automakers. Month over month, incentives fell 1.4% at FCA, while dropping 3.2% at GM and 1.0% at Ford, according to industry research firm ALG. The researchers also estimated that Ford boosted its December incentives by 35% year over year, with FCA and GM lifting incentives by 14% and 10%, respectively.

Looking ahead, there are two primary drivers for new car sales that are tugging in opposite directions. First is an expected large volume of vehicles coming off lease, which should make used-car prices fall and put downward pressure on new car sales. The other driver is promised tax cuts from President Donald Trump that could put more money in the pockets of buyers.

Other full-size pickups available in the United States are the Tundra from Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) and the Nissan Titan. Toyota sales for January were not yet available. The Titan sold 2,768 units in January, up a huge 195% compared with January 2016.

Sales of GM’s midsize Colorado pickup rose 19.2% to 9,431 units and sales of the GMC Canyon rose 34.9% to 4,048 in December. Nissan’s midsize Frontier pickup sold 3,857 units in January, down 39.0% year over year. Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (NYSE: HMC) sold 2,681 units of its all-new Ridgeline midsize pickup, up from just two in January of 2016.

In the full-size pickup segment, January sales of 127,738 vehicles from the Detroit Three pencils out to a Ford market share of 45.4% (a month-over-month gain of 3.3 points). GM’s share came in at 27.8% for the Chevy Silverado (down 2.3 points) and 10.7% (down 0.3 points) for the GMC Sierra. Ram’s market share totaled 26.4% (up four points).
