Cars Still Mostly Made in America

Over the past month, Tesla stock has continued to rise, wiping out the previous year-to-date losses. On Friday, July 5th, Tesla stock rose another 2%. By mid-April, the stock had fallen 40%, but this rally brings it up 43% in the last month. Tesla is an American manufacturer of electric vehicles, and it assembles the most made-in-America cars and trucks out of any American car manufacturer.

To find the cars that are still mostly made in America, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the report, American-Made Index for 2023 from Cars.com. We’ve included the top 25 American-made cars from Cars.com’s list of 100 (in order from the least to most American-made.) Cars.com whittled their list from 388 to the top 100. Scores are based on five criteria: assembly location, parts content, engine origin, transmission origin, and U.S. manufacturing workforce. We used sales figures from GoodCarBadCar.net’s data on the first quarter of 2023. (These are America’s most iconic car brands.)

Even American cars may have parts manufactured in other countries. Some auto manufacturers assemble or manufacture a large proportion of their inventory outside of the country, even though the models are American in origin. (Also check out: America’s hottest-selling cars.)

Tesla is the top manufacturer of American cars, with assembly lines located in California and Texas. According to Tesla, 100% of the domestic production of cars sold in the U.S. happens in the country. This is well above the industry average of 52%.
