Jurassic World's Gross Moves Toward $700 Million

The Jurassic Park franchise, with four films, is the No.1 franchise in U.S. cinema, with its first installment released in June 1993.  The total U.S gross of the films has reached over $1.4 billion. The latest installment, Jurassic World, is rapidly increasing that total.

Jurassic World has produced a U.S. gross of $650 million, and has had remarkable staying power since it was released. The film launched on June 15, three months ago. The newest installment has done much better than its predecessors.  According to Box Office Mojo Jurassic Park grossed $357,067,947 . The Lost World: Jurassic Park grossed $229,086,679 and was released on  May 23, 1997. Jurassic Park III made $181,171,875 and was released July 18, 2007

One of the notable things about the latest movie is that its release date was 14 years after the previous one. This brand has had remarkable staying power.

Box Office Mojo remarked on the power of the early days after Jurassic World’s opening weekend:

Jurassic World outperformed even the most optimistic of forecasts with an $82.8M Friday, the third best Friday opening on record, with only Age of Ultron ($84.4M) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 ($91M) still ahead of it.

Universal, who was playing it cool with estimates of $100M for the weekend, are now putting the three-day total at an astonishing $181.4M. Some reports are even putting it higher, at $192.7.

If we stay with the studio’s $181.4M that’s still the third biggest opening weekend of all time only behind Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.2M) and Marvel’s The Avengers ($207.4).

During a period in which illustrated films, super hero movies, and action productions like Mission Impossible take most of the weekend box office crowns, it is improbable that a dinosaur movie franchise which has not posted an installment in over a decade should do so well
