At Nokia World in Abu Dhabi, the Finnish company has unveiled a Windows RT tablet that has a 4G data chip, as well as its first phablets — extra-large phones — and an app that can change which objects in a photo are in focus.
The Lumia 2520 is the only Windows RT tablet made by a manufacturer other than Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT). It is slightly more compact than Microsoft’s Surface tablet and the Nokia tablet also supports an optional 4G Sim card. Its operating system runs on an ARM-based chip, which offers superior battery life to the full Windows 8 system running on tablets powered by x86 processors.
The new phablets are the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320. Both feature six-inch displays. The larger display shows more app buttons, and should make touchscreen keyboards easier to use than those of smaller competitors. The 1520 also includes four microphones, for consumers interested in recording at large events.
The new Refocus app allows users to choose which parts of a photograph are in focus and which are blurred — after the photo is taken. The camera in the phones do this by capturing several images at different focus lengths instead of just a single image.
At the event, Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) also added three models to its Asha line of low-end handsets. These phones are aimed at the emerging markets and at consumers on a budget.
This Nokia World will be the company’s final major event before it completes the sale of its hardware unit to Microsoft. The transaction is expected to be finalized in early 2014.
