What the iPhone 6 Was Supposed to Have, but Didn't

apple iphone 6 intro
Apple Inc.
The new iPhones from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) are finally here, and we wanted to run down the features that were anticipated before the product announcement and the ones that do not appear to have made it into the new phones.

The iPhone 6 has the expected 4.7-inch display and the iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen. Both have curved edges, but according to a slide in the presentation, the cover for the screen is described as “Ion-strengthened glass.” That suggests that neither of the new phones is covered with sapphire glass.

Despite some earlier talk about a waterproof phone, that feature was also not included in Tuesday’s announcement. Another feature that Apple may have added is a second audio speaker, but that too did not come to pass.

The Apple Pay electronic wallet system showed up as promised, with major credit card companies signed up and retailers like Walgreen Co. (NYSE: WAG), Macy’s Inc. (NYSE: M) and McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD) on board.

Apple did not make a predicted announcement about a rewards program for Apple Pay. The Apple Pay system becomes available in October.

Apple also introduced the Apple Watch, and CEO Tim Cook and others spent about half an hour touting the watch’s many features. We have a separate report on the Apple Watch.

The new iPhone 6 will cost $199 for a 16-GB version, $299 for a 64-GB version and $399 for the 128-GB version. All include a two-year contract with the mobile carrier. The iPhone 6 Plus will cost exactly $100 more at each storage level. The iPhone 5s will drop to $99.

The new iPhones will be available to preorder on September 12 and will ship to customers on September 19.

Oh, yes. U2 showed up at the end of the Apple Watch part of the show.
