7 of Top 10 Smartphone Vendors Based in China

China’s Huawei ranked third behind Samsung and Apple, with 7.3% of the global market. Lenovo tied with Xiaomi for fourth place, each claiming 5.3% of the market. The data were released Thursday by market research firm InsighData.
As the researchers point out, Chinese vendors have benefited from the vast size of the Chinese market to gain market share, but these same phone makers are making progress in international markets. ZTE (ranked seventh with 3.9% of the global market), Lenovo, and TCL (ranked eighth with 3%) have done well in the U.S. market, according to InsighData, while Xiaomi has expanded into India and Southeast Asia.
The data are interesting, but it is always worth remembering when looking at these data points, Apple’s 16.3% of the global market raked in a nearly unbelievable 92% of global profits from smartphone sales in the first quarter of this year, according to analysts at Canaccord Genuity. And when combined with Samsung’s profit, the two companies earned more than 100% of all the smartphone industry’s profits in the first quarter. That means every other maker is breaking even, at best.
