A number of the fastest-growing U.S. cities and counties are located in Texas, according to a new Census report. The report covers population changes in America between mid-2017 and mid-2018. One city stands out as the fastest growing, and it was the only one to add over 100,000 during the period.
The new report is headlined: “New Census Bureau Estimates Show Counties in South and West Lead Nation in Population Growth.” The report also covered cities. The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro area added 131,767 people between July 1, 2017, and July 1, 2018. No other American city came close. The study ranked America’s 390 largest metro areas. The Dallas suburb of Highland Park also was recently listed as one of America’s 50 best cities to live in.
The total population of the Dallas metro area as of mid-2018 was 7,407,944, which ranked it fourth in population among all American cities. The three ahead of it were the New York-Newark-Jersey City metro with 19,979,477 people, Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim with 13,291,486 and Chicago-Naperville-Elgin with 9,498,716. None of these three were on the Census list of the top 10 metros that added the most people.
Trailing the Dallas metro area in the number of people added over the course of the year was the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale area, which added 96,268, and the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, which added 91,689. No other metro added more than 90,000 people.
In the Census report, experts explained the rapid growth in the top two cities: “Migration, both domestic and international, as well as natural increase, contributed to the growth in each of these areas, with natural increase serving as the largest source of population growth in Dallas and domestic migration serving as the largest source in Phoenix.”
The Census also reported on the fastest growing counties in the country between July 1, 2017, and July 1, 2018. There are 3,142 counties in the United States. Four of the top 10 were in Texas. Comal County ranked second, as it grew 5.4% to 148,373. Kaufman County ranked third, growing 4.7% to 128,622. Midland County ranked sixth, growing 4.3% to 172,578. Hood County ranked ninth among the top 10 nationwide and grew 4.1% to 60,537. Roberts county in Texas was recently named among the fastest growing counties in every state.
