The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a magnitude 6.3 earthquake about 89 kilometers southeast of the Iranian city of Bushehr, the site of that country’s main nuclear energy development effort. There is no other information available at the moment.

An earthquake of this magnitude often causes serious damage in populated areas along with loss of life.

The quake struck at 11:52 UTC, just over two hours ago.

The crude oil market has not responded to the event yet, with Brent prices up only about 0.5%.

The USGS map notice is available here.
