We have tracked the short interest in the following North American Solar companies as of November 30: Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ), First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR), GT Advanced Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: GTAT), MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. (NYSE: WFR) and Sunpower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR).

In the Chinese solar sector we tracked the following short interest changes: JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO), LDK Solar Co. Inc. (NYSE: LDK), Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP), Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) and Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: YGE).

For China-based firms, the percentage of shares short is not available because the companies are also listed on other exchanges.

Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) saw short interest fall 8% to 3.03 million shares, or 10% of the company’s total float.

First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) short interest rose 0.1% to 25.87 million shares, which represents 43% of the company’s float.

GT Advanced Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: GTAT) showed a decrease of 0.1% in short interest, to 37.66 million shares, about 31.9% of GT’s float.

MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. (NYSE: WFR) showed a decline of 0.3% in short interest, to 24.22 million shares, about 10.6% of MEMC’s float.

Sunpower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR) saw short interest rise by 4.9% to 4.6 million shares, 11.6% of the company’s total float.

JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO) showed an increase of 1.6% in short interest to 8.94 million shares.

LDK Solar Co. Inc. (NYSE: LDK) saw short interest drop 1.2% to 6.91 million shares.

Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP) showed a rise of 15.5% in short interest to 22.49 million shares.

Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) saw short interest rise 0.7% to 15 million shares.

Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: YGE) showed a decline of 6.3% in short interest, to 5.55 million shares.

The majority of solar PV makers showed little change in short interest in the last half of November. The exception is Suntech, where short interest rose more than 15% due to the company’s continuing weakness and the reluctance of the firm’s CEO and founder to accept what amounts to a government takeover of the company. First Solar, GT Advanced Technologies, SunPower and Suntech all made our list of alternative energy picks and pans for 2013.
