Concealed carry is currently allowed in Florida, but many people are wondering if open carry is next. But open carry won’t be next — at least if Florida Senate President Ben Albritton (R-Wauchula) has anything to do with it. Albritton states that while he believes Floridians have the right to own a weapon, open carry places citizens in perilous positions. The state’s police have stated that open carry is a potentially threat to public safety and heightens the risk of potential violence. Albritton, who seems himself as a staunch supporter of the police force, backs the blue in this matter. This isn’t to say that Florida won’t change its gun laws in the future. Just don’t expect anything new for the time being. (Don’t open carry a gun in these states.)
Despite Albritton’s opposal to open carry, Florida remains a hub for small-arms manufacturing. A reported 529,360 firearms were manufactured in Florida in 2022, the ninth most among the 50 states, and equal to about 4.0% of all domestic firearm production that year. As of 2023, the arms and ammunition industry generated more than $90 billion in economic output, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, an industry trade association, and Florida definitely plays a role in that. Pistols are the most commonly manufactured gun in the state, followed by rifles. While over 230 federally-licensed gunmakers were operating in Florida as of 2022, only 23 manufacturing facilities in the state produced at least 500 firearms in 2022. Here, using data from the NSSF, ATF, and other sources, 24/7 Wall St. identified the top firearm manufacturers in Florida. It is important to note that this list is a ranking of production facilities, and as a result, a company can appear more than once. Gunmakers who are federally licensed under their first and last name, rather than a company or brand name, were excluded from this list.

The United States is the world’s largest consumer market for firearms. As a result, there are thousands of federally licensed gunmakers across the nation. Due to the presence of a small handful of companies (most notably, Kel Tec), more guns are manufactured in Florida than nearly anywhere else in the country. Florida’s firearm industry has a meaningful economic impact. Both directly and indirectly, arms and ammunition generated $4.7 billion in output and supported an estimated 23,539 jobs in 2023, according to the NSSF. Additionally, through property, sales, and income taxes, the state and federal government collected a combined $631.4 million in revenue from Florida’s arms and ammunition industry.
