Pfizer: New Life For Lipitor As Alzheimer's Treatment

A new medical study shows that people who take statins, cholesterol-lowering drugs, appear to be less likely to develope Alzheimer’s, one of the most damaging and fastest growing diseases. Pfizer’s (PFE) Lipitor is the top selling statin, bringing in $10. According to Reuters,  Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) Pravachol and Merck (MRK) Zocor are also in this category of drugs.

Lipitor went off-patent last year, opening it to competition from generics, and the market continues to be concerned about what this will do to Pfizer’s long term earnings.

Finding a new market for the drug could work wonders.
