Administration Committed To Improving IT Use To Make Way For Layoffs

The Administration means to make good on its goal to cut $250 billion from the discretionary part of the federal budget over the next decade–a sum that almost all analysts believe is inadequate.

Peter R. Orszag,  the Director of the Office of Management and Budget said in a memo today that

a significant IT gap has developed over the past decade and a half between the public and private sectors – and that is a big part of the productivity divide between the two. Closing this IT gap is key to boost efficiency and make government more open and responsive to the wants and needs of the public.

The improvement, if it can be made, will allow the Administration to fire enough employees to complete the $250 million in cuts.
