The 4 Stocks That Boosted Markets

April 21 2014: Markets opened higher on Monday but there wasn’t a lot of action as the only data out today was leading indicators, and they came in right on estimates. At the closing bell today today the DJIA was up 0.25%, the S&P 500 was up 0.38%, and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.64%.

Just as International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) was the Dow’s big loser last Thursday, it is the index’s top gainer today. Shares of Big Blue were up 1.19% at $192.27 on no news. The stock’s 52-week range is $172.19 to $211.98. Share volume was about equal to the daily average of around 5.7 million shares traded.

Dow 30 component Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) traded up 2.02% at $30.86 in a 52-week range of $27.12 to $32.96. Weekend rumors of a Pfizer buyout of AstraZeneca gave shares a boost today. Volume was about 15% above the daily average of nearly 29 million shares.

Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) closed at $61.24 today posting a rise of 3.9%. The stock’s 52-week range is $22.67 to $72.59. Share volume was about 20% below the daily average of around 68 million shares traded. The social media company is reported to be preparing the release of its own mobile advertising network.

Nasdaq 100 component Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) closed up 5.9% at $25.32 in a 52-week range of $9.07 to $25.68. The company got a boost from an analyst’s upgrade today with a new price target of $50. Volume was about a third higher than the daily average of around 32 million shares traded.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 13 closed higher today and 17 closed lower.
