The 4 Stocks That Held the DJIA in Check

July 28, 2014: Markets opened mixed on Monday following a couple of significant merger announcements early in the morning. The only economic news out today was pending home sales, which slipped for the first time in four months. Shortly before closing today the DJIA traded up 0.09% for the day, the S&P 500 traded down 0.01%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded 0.08%.

No Dow 30 stock dropped a lot today, but relatively small losses from many firms outweighed equally small gains. The stock posting the biggest drop was Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT)  which traded down 1.11% at $44.01. The stock’s 52-week range is $30.84 to $45.71. Share volume was about 25% below the daily average of around 30 million shares traded. Chinese regulators are investigating four of the company’s offices for alleged antitrust activities

General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) trading down 0.83% at $25.58 today in a 52-week range of $22.92 to $28.09. Volume was about 15% below the daily average of around 32 million shares traded. There was no news on the company today.

The Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) traded down 0.82% at $40.66 in a 52-week range of $36.83 to $42.57. Volume was about 25% below the daily average of around 12 million shares. There was no news on the company today.

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) traded lower by 0.72% at $104.06. The stock’s 52-week range is $81.46 to $111.46. Volume was about 10% above the daily average of around 3.5 million shares traded. The company had no news today.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 15 are set to close lower today and 13 are poised to close higher with 2 trading flat for the day.
