August 6, 2014: Markets opened lower Wednesday morning on overnight weakness in foreign markets. There was little economic data published today and the three major indexes traded in (barely) positive territory for most of the day. Shortly before closing today the DJIA traded up 0.11% for the day, the S&P 500 traded up 0.3%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded up 0.10%.

The Dow 30 stock posting the biggest percentage gain today was The Procter & Gamble Co. (NYSE: PG) which traded up 2.13% at $81.11 today in a 52-week range of $73.61 to $85.82. Volume was about 30% above the daily average of around 7.5 million shares traded. The company had no news today.

The Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) traded up 1.85% at $39.90. The stock’s 52-week range is $36.83 to $42.57. Share volume was about 10% above the daily average of around 12 million shares traded. There was no news on the firm today.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) traded up 1.96% today at $74.29 in a 52-week range of $71.51 to $81.37.  Volume was about 15% above the daily average of around 5.9 million shares. The company announced a new growth strategy for China today.

General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) traded higher by 1.72% at $25.45 today. The stock’s 52-week range is $22.92 to $28.09. Volume was about 70% above the daily average of around 27 million shares traded. The company received a surprise upgrade today.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 11 are set to close lower today and 19 are poised to close higher.
