The 4 Stocks That Weighed Down the Market

August 7, 2014: Markets opened higher Thursday but the thrill was gone by mid-morning when equities turned south and never came back. Only the utilities sector was able to stay in the black today. Shortly before closing today the DJIA traded down 0.54% for the day, the S&P 500 traded down 0.67%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded down 0.58%.

The Dow 30 stock posting the biggest percentage loss today was UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH) which traded down 2.71% at $79.31 today in a 52-week range of $66.72 to $87.24. Volume was about 30% above the daily average of around 3.7 million shares traded. The company had no news today, the healthcare sector was hardest hit today, down about 1.5%.

The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) traded down 1.27% today at $85.50 in a 52-week range of $60.41 to $87.63.  Volume was about 10% above the daily average of around 6.1 million shares. The company had no news today, but the consumer services sector fell 1% as a whole.

The Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) traded down 1.29% at $39.40. The stock’s 52-week range is $36.83 to $42.57. Share volume was about 15% below the daily average of around 12 million shares traded. There was no news on the firm today, but investors could be wary of restrictions on food imports into Russia.

Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE) traded lower by 1.1% at $76.29 today. The stock’s 52-week range is $22.92 to $28.09. Volume was about 10% below the daily average of around 3.2 million shares traded. The company was no news on Nike today, but there was no investor love for consumer goods either today.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 24 are set to close lower today and just 6 are poised to close higher.
