The 52-Week Low Club for Friday

September 19, 2014: The following stocks are among the 139 equities making new 52-week lows today:

Alpha Natural Resources Inc. (NYSE: ANR) dropped about 5.7% on Friday to post a new 52-week and all-time low of $2.96. Share volume is about 30% higher than the daily average of around 7.6 million. The stock’s 52-week high is $8.30. Alpha took one day longer to post a new low than did most of the other coal stocks. The outlook for coal is not perking up either.

ITT Educational Services Inc. (NYSE: ESI) dropped nearly 42% today to post a 52-week low of $4.47. The share price is down more than 90% from its 52-week high. The company acknowledged receipt of a Wells Notice from the SEC related to student loan practices at the school. The U.S. Department of Education is also monitoring the school’s compliance with financial aid regulations. Share volume today is about 6-times the average daily volume of around 840,000 shares. The stock’s 52-week high is $45.80.

SeaDrill Ltd. (NYSE: SDRL) dropped another 8% today to post a new 52-week low of $27.90. Volume is more than 3-times the daily average of around 4.9 million shares. The offshore drilling business is tanking and SeaDrill today lost one of its long-time board members, Tor Olav Troeim, who will no seek re-election in order to devote more effort to Golar LNG Partners LP (NASDAQ: GLMP), another company controlled by shipping magnate John Fredriksen. The stock’s 52-week high is $47.51.

Vale Inc. (NYSE: VALE) sank to a new 52-week low on Friday of $11.95. Based on Thursday night’s closing price of $12.32 that’s a drop of about 2.8%. The stock’s 52-week high is $17.14.The world’s largest iron ore producer is suffering from lack of demand, just as it was a week ago when it made our 52-week low club the last time. Trading volume was about 30% above the daily average of around 18 million shares.
