October 16, 2014: Equities got off to a slow start before punching through the break-even line early in the afternoon. But the gains were small and didn’t last. Here are four stocks among the 173 equities making new 52-week lows today.

Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE: BHI) dropped more than 11% on Thursday to a new 52-week low of $47.51 after closing at $53.63 on Wednesday evening. Share volume is about 5-times the daily average of around 3.7 million. The oil field services company reported Q3 results this morning that did not meet consensus estimates and shares got pummeled.

eBay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY) dropped about 7.8% today to post a 52-week low of $46.34. The stock’s 52-week high is $59.70. The company reported so-so earnings last night and cut its forecast — never a good combination for investors. Trading volume is about two and a half-times the daily average of around 13.9 million shares traded.

McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD) posted a drop of about about 1.2% today to post a new 52-week low of $89.34 against a 52-week high of $103.78. Volume is about equal to the daily average of around 6 million shares. The company had no specific news today other than to report the hiring of another former executive as McDonald’s tries to make a comeback in the U.S.

Southwestern Energy Co. (NYSE: SWN) sank to a new 52-week low on Thursday of $31.34. Based on Wednesday night’s closing price of $35.69 that’s a drop of about 12%. The stock’s 52-week high is $49.16. Trading volume is approaching 5-times the daily average of around 4.4 million shares. The company paid $5.4 billion today to Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) for natural gas assets in the Marcellus and Utica shale plays.
