November 4, 2014: Markets opened slightly lower on Tuesday as the bottom fell out on crude oil which went on to finish the day down 2% at just above $77 a barrel. New 52-week highs were double the total of new lows and 685 equities posted new 1-month highs today. Shortly before the closing bell the DJIA traded up 0.11% for the day, the S&P 500 traded down 0.29%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded down 0.34%.

The Dow 30 stock posting the largest daily gain ahead of the close today was The Procter & Gamble Co. (NYSE: PG) which traded higher by 1.50% at $88.69. The stock’s 52-week range is $75.26 to $88.87. Volume was about 10% above the daily average of around 8 million shares. Consumer goods was one of only two sectors not to post a loss today.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) traded up 1.27% at $77.25. The stock’s 52-week range is $72.27 to $81.37. Trading volume was about 20% below the daily average of around 6.3 million shares. The company has brought back its former Asia division chief who will also continue his headquarters role as the strategy chief for international operations.

3M Co. (NYSE: MMM) traded higher by 1.23% at $155.18. The stock’s 52-week range is $123.61 to $155.23, and the high was set today. Volume was about equal to the daily average of around 2.7 million shares. The company had no specific news today.

Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) traded up 1.01% at $108.55. The stock’s 52-week range is $86.09 to $108.77. Volume was about 5% below the daily average of around 7.4 million shares. The company had no specific news today.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 17 are set to close lower today and 13 are on track to close higher.
