The 4 Stocks That Weighed Down the DJIA on Tuesday

March 31, 2015: Markets opened lower on Tuesday as the dollar continued to show strength. The greenback pressured energy prices, and crude oil closed the day trading down about 2%. Economic news in the U.S. was mixed, with the Case-Shiller home price index coming in as expected, but the Chicago PMI number came in low. Shortly before the closing bell the DJIA traded down 0.91% for the day, the S&P 500 traded down 0.70%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded down 0.77%.

The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Tuesday was UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH) which traded lower by 2.06% at $118.51. The stock’s 52-week range is $73.61 to $123.76. Trading volume was about a third below the daily average of around 4.2 million shares. The company had no specific news today but the healthcare sector was among today’s big losers.

Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) traded down 1.81% at $104.97. The stock’s 52-week range is $98.88 to $135.10. Trading volume was about 35% below the daily average of around 8.6 million shares. The company had no specific news today, but lower crude oil prices led to the stock returning all of yesterday’s gain.

The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) traded down 1.73% at $150.06. The stock’s 52-week range is $116.32 to $158.83. Trading volume was about 60% below the daily average of around 4.5 million shares. The company had no specific news today.

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) traded down 1.66% at $80.04. The stock’s 52-week range is $78.19 to $111.46. Trading volume was about 40% below the daily average of around 6.5 million shares. The company had no specific news today, but the end-of-quarter sell-off and strong dollar didn’t help the heavy equipment maker.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 28 are set to close lower today and just 2 are on track to close higher.
