June 18, 2015: Markets opened higher on Thursday based on the FOMC’s decision to leave interest rates alone and generally good economic data reported early this morning. A weaker dollar also helped push up equity prices. Oil prices rose about 0.8%, but natural gas prices dropped sharply. Shortly before the closing bell the DJIA traded up 1.13% for the day, the S&P 500 traded up 1.06%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded up 1.38%.
The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close Wednesday was 3M Company (NYSE: MMM) which traded up 1.83% at $159.83. The stock’s 52-week range is $130.60 to $170.50. Trading volume totaled about 2 million shares, below the daily average of more than 2.2 million. The company had no specific news today.
The Travelers Companies Inc. (NYSE: TRV) traded up 1.83% at $101.61. The stock’s 52-week range is $88.81 to $110.49. Trading volume totaled about 1.7 million shares, somewhat below the daily average of around 2 million. The company also had no specific news today.
The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) traded higher by 1.74%% at $113.43. The stock’s 52-week range is $78.54 to $113.55, a new 52-week high set earlier today. Trading volume was about equal to the daily average of 5.7 million. The company’s ESPN sports network enjoyed record ratings for the NBA finals and a “Star Wars”-themed video game is due out in time for the holiday season this year.
Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) traded up 1.69% at $100.40. The stock’s 52-week range is $95.10 to $109.49. About 5.8 million shares traded hands today, about 25% below the daily average of around 7.7 million. The company had no specific news today.
