Wednesday, July 8, 2015 is one of those days that conspiracy theorists just love. Multiple big scale outages have taken place, all of which are reportedly not tied to each other. Conspiracy theorists would poke holes in this endlessly.

Imagine a day that the New York Stock Exchange, United Airlines, The Wall Street Journal, and even reportedly ZeroHedge.com were all down. That was the case on Wednesday, and it is important to realize that these system and site outages were not all taking place at the same time even if there were certainly time overlaps here.

24/7 Wall St. wanted to issue a live update on these outages, many of which were temporary. This will be updated as new data comes in and as we add data from the time as well. Unfortunately, typos and strict editing guidelines will not be maintained at this time.

UPDATES BELOW:

As of 12:45 p.m. the New York Stock Exchange had been unable to trade on its systems. All open orders have been cancelled. NASDAQ trading was normal, but volume was thin.

The start of it was that United Airlines had its flights grounded due to computer issues. That was then lifted, and United’s Twitter feed:

  • We’re recovering from a network connectivity issue & restoring flight ops. We’ll have a waiver on http://united.com  to change flights.
  • We experienced a network connectivity issue. We are working to resolve and apologize for any inconvenience.

NYSE had issues earlier, which were supposedly resolved before the halt was seen. The NYSE Trading Status showed the following:
——-
NYSE Arca and NYSE Amex/Arca Options are unaffected by this issue and continue normal operations at this time

WSJ OUTAGE: 11:50 —

The Wall Street Journal homepage was inaccessible just after the NYSE outage. The website displayed a 504 error when attempting to access the site. A 504 error refers to a website acting far too slow to process requests for the webpage. At that time the homepage was only available on the West coast.

status as of 12:30 p.m. SITE WORKING. Here was the post from WSJ.COM during the outage:

NYSE:

President of NYSE, Tom Farley, said that the NYSE plans on reopening between 2:45 to 3:00 p.m. Eastern.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS):

Secretary Johnson — Malfunctions don’t appear to be nefarious — United, NYSE, WSJ glitches are result of ‘system malfunction’ 13:25

United Continental Outage:

United announced that all of its flights in the United States were grounded Wednesday morning due to a computer problem. According to the company, the problem was related to “network connectivity.”

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the flights were grounded because of an outage in the check-in system. Reportedly, ticket agents in some cases were forced to check in passengers using just pen and paper.

This was not the only time that United had to halt flights recently. The airline had a similar situation in early June when it was temporarily (less than an hour) forced to halt all takeoffs due to “automation issues.”

As of 10:00 a.m. E.T., United noted that the most recent issue had been resolved.

10-Year Treasury Note Auction Went Fine:

Whether you want to blame trading and system outages, China, or Greece, the $21 billion 10-Year Treasury Note auction went off rather well. The yield went off at 2.225%, a tad lower than what was expected. Indirect bids were 58.1% (above a Dow Jones 55.4% noted average of 8 trailing auctions); and Direct bidding was 12.1% (vs. 11.8% DJ average).
