The five NASDAQ companies with the largest short positions as of November 13th are Frontier Communications Corp. (NASDAQ: FTR), Sirius XM Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI), MannKind Corporation (NASDAQ: MNKD), Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD), and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC).
Frontier’s share price dropped nearly 10% during the two-week short interest reporting period. The number of shares short fell nearly 9% in the period to 157.14 million, about 13.5% of the company’s float and days to cover fell from 13 to 8. Frontier’s shares closed down 1.2% on Tuesday at $4.90 in a 52-week range of $4.19 to $8.46.
Shares of Sirius dropped about 1.2% in the two-week period and short interest fell by 5.5% to 147.21 million shares. Days to cover rose from 4 to 5 and about 7.2% of Sirius shares are now short. Shares closed at $4.11 on Tuesday, down 0.8% for the day, in a 52-week range of $3.27 to $4.20.
MannKind’s short interest rose 0.4% to 120.55 million shares or 46.2% of the total float. Days to cover fell from 19 to 9. Last Friday the company’s CEO resigned after less than a year at the job. MannKind’s key product, the diabetes drug Afrezza, has been selling poorly and shares tumbled nearly 30% in the two-week short interest period to November 13th. MannKind’s stock closed Tuesday down 2.2% at $2.20 in a 52-week range of $1.76 to $7.88.
Short interest in AMD fell 2.4% to 116.88 million shares, or 18.5% of the stock’s float. Days to cover rose from 13 to 19 and the shares fell about 6.6% during the two-week period. Shares closed up 5.4% Tuesday at $2.34 in a 52-week range of $1.61 to $3.37.
Intel short interest fell 11.7% to 95.56 million shares, or 2% of the company’s float. Days to cover rose from three to four, and the stock price slipped about 5.6% during the two-week period. Shares closed down 0.35% on Tuesday at $34.36 in a 52-week range of $24.87 to $37.90.
A comparison between Intel and AMD share prices for the past month shows that AMD shares have added nearly 9% while Intel’s shares are down about 0.7%. For the past three months Intel stock has risen 33% compared with a 41% rise in AMD’s share price. But over the past 12 months, Intel’s shares have traded down about 6.9% compared with a 17.6% drop in AMD’s stock price.
