The 52-Week Low Club for Tuesday

December 15, 2015: Here are four stocks trading with heavy volume among 191 equities making new 52-week lows today.

Southwestern Energy Co. (NYSE: SWN) slipped about 1.5% on Tuesday to post a new 52-week low of $5.25 against a high of $31.49. The stock closed at $5.33 on Monday night. Volume was about 70% higher than the daily average of around 14.8 million shares traded. The energy company had no specific news either today.

Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) dropped about 3.8% on Tuesday to post a new 52-week low of $3.85 against a 52-week high of $21.49. The stock closed at $4.00 on Monday night. Volume topped 16 million shares, about 20% below the daily average of around 21 million shares traded. The energy provider is taking a beating on natural gas prices that are around 14 year lows.

Encana Corp. (NYSE: ECA) posted a new low on Tuesday. Shares dropped about 2.9% to a low of $5.38 from Monday’s closing price of $5.54. The stock’s 52-week high is $14.73. Volume was about 20% above the daily average of around 12 million shares. Even an upgrade from Jefferies this morning could stop the fall caused by yesterday’s dividend cut and low estimate for capex in 2016..

Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. (NYSE: COG) dropped about 4.5% on Tuesday to post a new 52-week low at $14.94 after closing at $15.65 on Monday. The stock’s 52-week high is $35.64. Share volume was nearly double the daily average of around 6.5 million. Like Chesapeake and the other natural gas producers, Cabot is getting beaten up by low gas prices.
