Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

March 30, 2017: The S&P 500 closed higher on the day, up 0.29% and 6.95 points to 2,368.08. Separately the DJIA closed up 0.32% on the day at 20,726.33, up approximately 67.01 points.

The broad markets were largely driven higher on Thursday by the financial sector with most of the major financial institutions posting gains over 1% on the day. There was also strength in healthcare providers as well as the services sector. Again utilities were one of the few areas in the S&P 500 posting a loss along with textiles.

Crude oil continued higher in Thursday’s session up 1.6% at $50.30.

Gold, fell on the day, down 0.9% or $11.20 on the day, closing at $1,242.50.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM) which traded down 4.8% at $60.40. The stock’s 52-week range is $47.80 to $71.64. Volume was roughly 5.7 million versus the daily average of 1.9 million shares.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) which jumped 8.5% to $49.87. The stock’s 52-week range is $38.19 to $53.17. Volume was 28.5 million which is above the daily average of around 7.0 million shares.
