
April 6, 2017: The S&P 500 closed higher on the day, up 0.20% and 4.53 points to 2,357.58. Separately the DJIA closed up 0.08% on the day at 20,664.04, up approximately 15.89 points.
Looking at the sectors, oil & gas stocks had a positive day as the price of crude rose. Financial stocks bounced back from Wednesday as well as textiles. Also department stores and retail, in general, saw an uptick on Thursday. Very few industries were negative on the day, notable exceptions were major telecom stocks and cigarette stocks.
Crude oil turned itself around from Wednesday. Crude was last trading up around 1% at $51.68 in Thursday’s session.
Gold was also higher on the day up about 0.5% or $6.10 on the day, closing at $1,251.50.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) which traded down 2.2% at $40.61. The stock’s 52-week range is $36.10 to $43.89. Volume was roughly 16.8 million versus the daily average of 19.2 million shares.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was L Brands, Inc. (NYSE: LB) which jumped about 11% to $47.85. The stock’s 52-week range is $43.04 to $87.16. Volume was 13.9 million which is above the daily average of around 4.2 million shares.
