May 15, 2017: The S&P 500 closed 0.5% higher on the day at 2,402.20 hitting a new high. Separately the DJIA closed higher, up 0.4% at 20,984.31. The Nasdaq was also closed up 0.5% at 6,149.05, hitting another high in the session.
Monday was a very strong day for the markets, so far the best trading day in May. There were green arrows across the board with no sector or industry really dragging the market. The stocks that were down were few and far between with Entertainment being the only industry that was actually negative. The biggest gains were seen in financial stocks and tech stocks, with more emphasis on the mid- and small-caps.
Crude oil made another great gain on Monday up 2.1% at $48.85.
Gold was also slightly higher, up about 0.2% closing at $1,230.30.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Monday was Southwestern Energy Co. (NYSE: SWN) which traded down 4.3% at $7.33. The stock’s 52-week range is $6.81 to $15.59. Volume was 20.4 million versus the daily average of 19.0 million shares.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Monday was Qorvo, Inc. (NASDAQ: QRVO) which jumped about 5.5% to $71.53. The stock’s 52-week range is $45.00 to $72.42. Volume was 3.8 million which is above the daily average 1.5 million shares.
