UnitedHealth, Goldman Sachs Push DJIA Higher Thursday

June 1, 2017: Markets opened higher Thursday following a robust report on job growth from ADP that will be a harbinger of Friday’s from the federal government on non-farm payrolls. Financial and healthcare stocks led all sectors today, but no sector traded in the red. Crude oil prices slipped, then rose, and by the end of the day managed a gain of just a few cents following a big decline in commercial inventories. The  WTI crude oil for July delivery settled at $48.36 a barrel, up 4 cents for the day. August gold dropped 0.4% for the day to settle at $1,270.10. The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close Thursday was UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH) which traded up 2.33% at $179.26. The stock’s 52-week range is $132.39 to $179.42, a new high posted today. Volume was about 30% below the daily average of around 3.3 million shares. The insurance giant had no specific news.

The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) traded up 1.73% at $214.91. The stock’s 52-week range is $138.20 to $255.15 Volume was about equal to the daily average of around 3.8 million shares. The investment bank had no specific news Thursday.

General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) traded up 1.19% at $27.70. The stock’s 52-week range is $27.10 to $33.00. Volume was about 25% lower than the daily average of around 32 million shares. The company’s proposed merger with oilfield services firm Baker-Hughes was approved by the European Union this morning.

McDonald’s Corp. (NYSE: MCD) traded up 1.37% at $152.00. The stock’s 52-week range is $110.33 to $152.03, a new 52-week high posted today. Volume was about equal to the daily average of around 3.7 million. The company had no specific news Thursday.

Of the Dow stocks, 22 are on track to close higher Thursday and 8 are set to close lower.
