Wednesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

July 12, 2017: The S&P 500 closed up 0.7% at 2,443.40. The DJIA closed up 0.6% at 21,532.65. Separately, the Nasdaq closed up 1.1% at 6,261.17.
Wednesday was an incredibly positive day for the U.S. markets. Crude oil pushed higher on the day bringing up the oil & gas stocks, although there were a couple laggards in the group. For the most part, there really weren’t that many stocks posting a loss on Wednesday. On the other hand, everything was positive, led by a strong mega caps tech sector and an overall strong health care sector. Not to mention, the DJIA hit a new record high in intraday trading.
Crude oil was last seen up about 1% at $45.49.
Gold was also trading up 0.5% at $1,220.70.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Wednesday was W.W. Grainger, Inc. (NYSE: GWW) which traded down over 4% at $168.72. The stock’s 52-week range is $167.44 to $262.71. Volume was 1.9 million versus the daily average of 1.1 million shares.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Wednesday was First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) which rose nearly 5% to $41.79. The stock’s 52-week range is $25.56 to $49.50. Volume was 3.3 million compared to its average volume of 3.0 million.
