Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

July 20, 2017: The S&P 500 closed flat at 2,474.12. The DJIA closed down 0.1% at 21,619.86. Separately, the Nasdaq closed up 0.1% at 6,391.38.

Thursday was a another mixed day for the U.S. broad markets, although they all ended relatively flat. Crude oil posted its first loss for the week but the oil & gas stocks didn’t take it too hard, although the sector did post a loss on the day. The healthcare sector was by far the most positive on the day along with utilities. The tech and financial sectors were largely mixed but more or less positive.

Crude oil was last seen down about 0.8% at $46.73.

Gold was relatively flat at $1,243.00.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was Alliance Data Systems Corp. (NYSE: ADS) which traded down about 9% at $238.71. The stock’s 52-week range is $193.67 to $266.25. Volume was about 2 million versus the daily average of 651,000 million shares.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was Frontier Communications Corp. (NASDAQ: FTR) which rose over 4% to $14.91. The stock’s 52-week range is $13.13 to $78.30. Volume was nearly 3 million compared to its average volume of 2.7 million.
