August 3, 2017: The S&P 500 closed down 0.2% at 2,472.08. The DJIA closed relatively flat at 22,024.80 but still a record close. Separately, the Nasdaq closed down 0.35% at 6,340.34.
The U.S. broad markets took a step back on Thursday after the Dow hit a new all-time high. However, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq dropped in the meantime. Crude oil fell as well leading to oil & gas stocks crumbling in Thursday’s session. Utilities and industrials were relatively positive in the session but that was about it. The rest of the S&P 500 was mixed or down on the day.
Crude oil was last seen down 1.5% at $48.86, taking a step back.
Gold was down 0.2% at $1,269.00.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was Frontier Communications Corp. (NASDAQ: FTR) which traded down nearly 16% at $14.35. The stock’s 52-week range is $13.13 to $74.70. Volume was about 6.6 million versus the daily average of 2.8 million shares.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was Stericycle, Inc. (NASDAQ: SRCL) which rose over 8% to $82.49. The stock’s 52-week range is $71.52 to $90.45. Volume was 2.7 million compared to its average volume of 715,853.
