Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

September 21, 2017: The S&P 500 closed down 0.3% at 2,500.81. The DJIA closed down 0.2% at 22,360.26. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 0.5% at 6,422.69.

Thursday was a down day for the broad U.S. markets with all averages pulling back from their all-time highs. Crude oil didn’t do too much on the day and oil & gas stocks had mixed reactions. The best performing S&P 500 sector was financials, up about 0.4%. Industrials was the next best performing sector, coming in around 0.3%. Consumer staples was the worst performing sector on the day, down about 1%.

Crude oil stayed relatively flat at $50.65.

Gold was down 1.7% at $1,94.50.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. (NYSE: DO) which traded down 5% at $13.09. The stock’s 52-week range is $10.06 to $22.65. Volume was 4.5 million versus the daily average of 3.0 million shares.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: APC) which rose 8% to $48.50. The stock’s 52-week range is $39.96 to $73.33. Volume was roughly 15 million compared to its average volume of 4.8 million.
