
September 22, 2017: The S&P 500 closed up 0.05% at 2,501.97. The DJIA closed down 0.05% at 22,347.32. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 0.07% at 6,426.92.
Friday was a slow day for the broad U.S. markets. Although the major averages took a step back, they are still in striking range of their all-time highs. Crude oil didn’t do too much on the day and oil & gas stocks had mixed reactions. Despite this oil will post its third straight week of gains. The best performing S&P 500 sector was energy, up about 0.6%. Real estate was the worst performing sector on the day, down about 0.74%, followed closely by utilities down 0.73%.
Crude oil stayed relatively flat at $50.62.
Gold was up 0.4% at $1,299.60.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Friday was DaVita Inc. (NYSE: DVA) which traded down 6% at $57.53. The stock’s 52-week range is $54.50 to $70.16. Volume was over 7 million versus the daily average of 1.4 million shares.
The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Friday was CarMax Inc. (NYSE: KMX) which rose about 8% to $74.18. The stock’s 52-week range is $47.50 to $74.57. Volume was roughly 8.7 million compared to its average volume of 1.7 million.
