Monday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

October 9, 2017: The S&P 500 closed down 0.18% at 2,544.66. The DJIA closed down 0.06% at 22,760.86. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 0.16% at 6,579.73.

Monday was a down day for the U.S. markets with all major averages pulling back, if only slightly. Crude started off the week with a positive day. The S&P 500 sectors were more or less split down the middle, although the losses outweighed the gains. The best performing sectors were technology and energy which were up 0.25% and 0.22%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were healthcare and financials, down 0.63% and 0.40%, respectively.

Crude oil was up 0.5% at $49.52.

Gold was up 1% at $1,287.10.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Monday was DaVita Inc. (NYSE: DVA) which traded down nearly 10% at $53.89. The stock’s 52-week range is $53.86 to $70.16. Volume was 8.7 million versus the daily average of 1.6 million shares.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Monday was Frontier Communications Corp. (NASDAQ: FTR) which rose 2.7% to $12.53. The stock’s 52-week range is $11.65 to $64.35. Volume was 1.7 million compared to its average volume of 2.8 million.
