Tuesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

October 17, 2017: The S&P 500 closed up 0.07% at 2,559.35. The DJIA closed up 0.17% at 22,996.55. Separately, the Nasdaq was flat at 6,623.66.

Tuesday was a positive day for the U.S. broad markets with all exchanges hitting new all-time highs and the Dow breaking above 23,000. Crude oil started out the week with a solid gain, but only posted a marginal gain on Tuesday. The S&P 500 sectors were split down the middle. The best performing sectors were healthcare and utilities which were up 1.3% and 0.57%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were finance and consumer staples, down 0.53% and 0.40%, respectively.

Crude oil was up 0.2% at $51.96.

Gold was down over 1% at $1,287.00.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Tuesday was Xylem Inc. (NYSE: XYL) which traded down 4% at $63.26. The stock’s 52-week range is $45.60 to $66.28. Volume was about 3 million versus the daily average of nearly 1 million shares.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Tuesday was W.W. Grainger, Inc. (NYSE: GWW) which rose about 13% to $206.05. The stock’s 52-week range is $155.55 to $262.71. Volume was around 6 million compared to its average volume of nearly 1 million.
