Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

November 9, 2017: The S&P 500 closed down 0.38% at 2,584.63. The DJIA closed down 0.43% at 23,461.94. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 0.58% at 6,750.05.

Thursday was a down day for the broad U.S. markets with all of the major exchanges ending the day lower. Crude oil started off flat but pushed higher as the day went on. The S&P 500 sectors were split down the middle, but the negatives far outweighed the positives. The best performing sectors were energy and consumer discretionary, up 0.3% and 0.1%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were industrials, materials, and technology down 1.3%, 0.9%, and 0.8%, respectively.

Crude oil was up 0.5% at $57.09.

Gold was up 0.3% at $1,286.90.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was TransDigm Group Inc. (NYSE: TDG) which traded down about 7% at $265.50. The stock’s 52-week range is $203.72 to $295.00. Volume was roughly 1.2 million versus the daily average of less than 0.5 million shares.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was Macy’s, Inc. (NYSE: M) which rose about 11% to $19.50. The stock’s 52-week range is $17.41 to $45.41. Volume was about 59 million compared to its average volume of 11 million.
