Tuesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

January 16, 2018: The S&P 500 closed down 0.3% at 2,7776.52. The DJIA closed relatively flat at 25,797.00. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 0.5% at 7,223.69.

Tuesday was a crazy day for the U.S. markets, while all three of the major averages hit all-time highs the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed down on the day. Prior to the markets opening, each of the exchanges was up massively but over the course of the day each one crumbled. The DJIA even reached above 26,000 and the S&P 500 above 2,800, but both quickly retreated. Crude oil started off the week down slightly. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly negative. The best performing sectors were real estate and health care up 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were materials and financials, down 1.1% and 1.0%, respectively.

Crude oil was down 0.7% at $63.84.

Gold was up 0.4% at $1,339.90.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Tuesday was Viacom, Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB) which traded down roughly 7% at $31.29. The stock’s 52-week range is $22.13 to $46.72. Volume was over 8 million, compared with the daily average of 5.9 million shares.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Tuesday was Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE: MRK) which rose about 6% to $62.19. The stock’s 52-week range is $53.63 to $66.80. Volume was 43 million compared to its average volume of 12.3 million.
