Investors are now deciding how to position their portfolios for 2018 and beyond, and they are looking for new investment ideas.

These were the top analyst upgrades, downgrades and other research calls from Thursday, January 18, 2018.

Alarm.com Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: ALRM) was raised to Buy from Hold and the price target was raised to $46 from $44 (versus a $38.27 prior close) at Jefferies.

American Electric Power Co. Inc. (NYSE: AEP) was raised to Buy from Hold with a $75 price target (versus a $68.25 close) at Deutsche Bank.

Appian Corp. (NASDAQ: APPN) was downgraded to Sell from Neutral with a $20 price target (versus a $38.43 close) at Goldman Sachs.

Atmos Energy Corp. (NYSE: ATO) was maintained as Buy at Argus, but the independent research firm lowered its price target to $89 from $97 (versus an $80.82 close).

Avery Dennison Corp. (NYSE: AVY) was started with a Buy rating and assigned a $135 price target (versus a $118.88 close) at UBS.

CarMax Inc. (NYSE: KMX) was raised to Outperform from Perform with an $88 price target (versus a $69.84 close) at Oppenheimer.

Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) was started with a Buy rating and assigned a $200 price target (versus a $168.50 close) at Berenberg. Caterpillar shares closed down 0.5% on Wednesday but were indicated up 0.3% at$169.00 on Thursday. Its 52-week trading range is $90.34 to $173.24.

Charles Schwab Corp. (NYSE: SCHW) was reiterated as Buy and the price target was raised to $69 from $59 (versus a $56.09 close) at Argus, noting an earnings beat and that its effective tax rate may go down closer to 25% from about 35% in 2017.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (NYSE: CMG) was reiterated as Buy and the price target was raised to $425 from $400 (versus a $334.63 close) at Maxim. Chipotle has a 52-week range of $263.00 to $499.00.

Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. (NASDAQ: CTSH) was raised to Buy from Neutral with an $89 price target (versus a $75.84 close) at Citigroup.

Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ: CMCSA) was downgraded to Neutral from Buy but the price target was raised to $45 from $42 (versus a $41.68 close) at Instinet. UBS had raised its target to $49 from $45 just a day earlier.

CSX Corp. (NYSE: CSX) was reiterated as Buy and the price target was raised to $66 from $64 (versus a $57.69 close) at Argus. The call talked up that a new CEO is now on board, as well cost structures being lowered, and as being in a position to benefit from the lower corporate tax rate.

Esperion Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: ESPR) was started as Outperform with a $103 price target (versus a $75.84 close) at Credit Suisse. The firm believes that upcoming Phase 3 data could support major upside in 2018.

First Data Corp. (NYSE: FDC) was raised to Buy from Neutral at Merrill Lynch.

First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) was downgraded to Neutral from Buy with a $74 price target (versus a $72.01 close) at Guggenheim. The 52-week range is $25.56 to $76.61, and First Solar has a consensus analyst target price of $69.19.

Fluor Corp. (NYSE: FLR) was raised to Outperform from Neutral and the price target was raised to $71 from $43 (versus a $58.13 close) at Credit Suisse.

Hertz Global Holdings Inc. (NYSE: HTZ) was raised to Outperform from Neutral at Macquarie.

Johnson Controls International PLC (NYSE: JCI) was downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at Cowen.

Juno Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: JUNO) was up over 50% to $69.25 on buyout reports on Wednesday. The shares were downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Citigroup as the price now reflects the full value. The stock was reiterated as Buy at Maxim, and the firm raised its target price to $98 from $56.

Lennar Corp. (NYSE: LEN) was raised to Buy from Neutral with an $80 price target (versus a $70.71 close) at Mizuho.

New Residential Investment Trust (NYSE: NRZ) was raised to Outperform from Neutral at Wedbush.

Palo Alto Networks Inc. (NYSE: PANW) was raised to Outperform from In-Line with a $180 price target (versus a $154.23 close) at Evercore ISI.

PPL Corp. (NYSE: PPL) was raised to Buy from Hold with a $36 price target (versus a $31.57 close) at Deutsche Bank.

PulteGroup Inc. (NYSE: PHM) was raised to Buy from Neutral with a $39 price target (versus a $34.40 close) at Mizuho.

Spark Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: ONCE) was started as Outperform and assigned a $61 price target (versus a $51.53 prior close) at Credit Suisse.

Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) was downgraded to Underperform with a $23 price target (versus a $27.52 close) at Jefferies.

UltraGenyx Pharmaceutical Inc. (NASDAQ: RARE) was started with an Outperform rating and assigned a $67 price target (versus a $47.77 close) at Credit Suisse. The firm is looking forward to 2018 being a transformational year, but its target is under the $65.65 consensus price target.

UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH) was reiterated as Buy and the price target was raised to $270 from $230 (versus a $238.43 close) at Argus. UnitedHealth saw multiple analyst target hikes on Wednesday, as well after strong earnings.

Vivint Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: VSLR) was downgraded to Neutral from Buy with a $5 price target (versus a $4.00 prior close) at Guggenheim.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) was raised to Buy from Neutral and the price target was raised to $117 from a prior $115 price target at Goldman Sachs, and Walmart was also added to the prized Conviction Buy list. Shares closed up 2% at $102.70 on Wednesday and were indicated up another 1.5% at $104.30 on Thursday.

Worldpay Inc. (NYSE: WP), the newly merged Vantiv and Worldpay combo, was raised to Outperform with a $95 target at BMO Capital Markets. Wedbush updated its coverage with new combined targets as well, reiterating its Outperform rating and $100 price target. Shares closed at $78.26 on Wednesday.

YY Inc. (NASDAQ: YY) was raised to Buy from Neutral with a $161 target price (up from $80 before and versus a $134.94 close) at Instinet.
