Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

February 8, 2018: The S&P 500 closed down 3.8% at 2,581.07. The DJIA closed down 3.6% at 23,994.11. Separately, the Nasdaq was down 3.3% at 6,816.19.

Thursday was another down day for U.S. equity markets. The Dow, after losing 1,000 points on Monday, continued its drop with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq along for the ride. Since markets started falling off this cliff, the Dow is down roughly 2,600 points from its high in January. Crude oil sold off in the session again and is back around $60. The S&P 500 sectors were entirely negative in Thursday’s session. The most “positive” sector was utilities down only 1.2%. The worst performing sectors were financials, technology, and consumer discretionary down 4.4%, 4.1%, and 4.0%, respectively.

Crude oil was down 2.0% at $60.53.

Gold was up 0.5% at $1,321.00.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was Nielsen Holdings PLC (NYSE: NLSN) which traded down over 9% at $33.99. The stock’s 52-week range is $33.90 to $45.73. Volume was 11.3 million compared to the daily average volume of 3.8 million.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was Viacom, Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB) which rose about 7% to $32.71. The stock’s 52-week range is $22.13 to $46.72. Volume was about 11 million compared to the daily average volume of roughly 5.8 million.
