Monday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

February 26, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 1.2% at 2,779.61. The DJIA closed up 1.6% at 25,708.93. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 1.2% at 7,421.46.

Monday was a very positive day for the broad U.S. markets, with all three of the major exchanges closing at least 1% higher on the day. Crude oil made decent start to week and is holding close to the $64 price level. The S&P 500 sectors were almost entirely positive. The most positive sectors were technology, financials, and industrials up 1.4%, 1.4% and 1.3%, respectively. The worst performing sector was utilities down 0.4%.

Crude oil was up 0.7% at $63.97.

Gold was up 0.4% at $1,334.90.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Monday was Albemarle Corp. (NYSE: ALB) which traded down about 7% at $110.04. The stock’s 52-week range is $92.22 to $144.99. Volume was nearly 7 million compared to the daily average volume of roughly 2 million.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Monday was HP Inc. (NYSE: HPQ) which rose over 6% to $23.49. The stock’s 52-week range is $17.03 to $24.10. Volume was almost 20 million compared to the daily average volume of about 10 million.
