Tuesday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

March 6, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.3% at 2,728.13. The DJIA closed relatively flat at 24,883.85. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 0.6% at 7,372.01.

Tuesday was mixed day for the broad U.S. markets, with all the major indices going positive and negative at some point during the day. At one point the Dow was down over 150 points, however it managed to recover by the end of the day to close flat. Crude oil more or less just traded sideways on Tuesday. The S&P 500 sectors were mostly positive. The most positive sectors were materials and consumer discretionary up 1.0% and 0.6%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were utilities and health care down 1.4% and 0.3%, respectively.

Crude oil was relatively flat at $62.67.

Gold was up 1.2% at $1,335.40.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Tuesday was Newfield Exploration Company (NYSE: NFX) which traded down nearly 5% at $23.22. The stock’s 52-week range is $22.96 to $37.61. Volume was 5.2 million compared to the daily average volume of 3.3 million.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Tuesday was Lam Research Corp. (NASDAQ: LRCX) which rose 5% to $208.03. The stock’s 52-week range is $116.94 to $219.70. Volume was 6.4 million compared to the daily average volume of 3.4 million.
