Thursday's Biggest Winners and Losers in the S&P 500

March 7, 2018: The S&P 500 closed up 0.4% at 2,738.94. The DJIA closed up 0.4% at 24,894.24. Separately, the Nasdaq was up 0.4% at 7,427.95.

Thursday ended up a net positive day for the broad U.S. markets. The markets shifted from positive to negative a couple times throughout the day, but ultimately finished on a positive note. Most of the gain for the markets came at the end of the day. Crude oil posted another significant drop. The S&P 500 sectors were almost entirely positive. The most positive sectors were consumer staples and real estate up 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively. The worst performing sector was energy down less than 0.1%.

Crude oil was down 1.4% at $60.29.

Gold was down 0.4% at $1,322.20.

The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close Thursday was The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR) which traded down 12% at $23.00. The stock’s 52-week range is $19.69 to $31.45. Volume was over 61 million compared to the daily average volume of nearly 10 million.

The stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close Thursday was Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM) which rose about 7% to $74.89. The stock’s 52-week range is $44.65 to $75.00. Volume was roughly 4 million compared to the daily average volume of 2.3 million.
